About Indian Railways:

Indian Railways is a state-owned enterprise that is organised as a departmental undertaking of the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India and operates India's national railway system. As of 2024, it manages the fourth largest national railway system by size with a track length of 135,207 km (84,014 mi), running track length of 109,748 km (68,194 mi) and route length of 69,181 km (42,987 mi). The first steam operated railway operated in 1837 in Madras with the first passenger operating in 1853 between Bombay and Thane. In 1925, the first electric train ran in Bombay on DC traction. The first locomotive manufacturing unit was commissioned in 1950 at Chittaranjan with the first coach manufacturing unit set-up at Madras in 1955.

Indian Railways runs various classes of express, passenger, and suburban trains. In 2023–4, it operated 13,198 trains on average daily covering 7,325 stations and carried 6.905 billion passengers. Indian Railways also operates different classes of rail freight transport. In 2023–4, it operated 11,724 freight trains on average daily and transported 1588.06 million tonnes of freight. Indian Railways operates multiple classes of rolling stock, manufactured by self-owned coach-production facilities. As of 31 March 2024, Indian Railways' rolling stock consisted of 327,991 freight wagons, 91,948 passenger coaches (including multiple unit coaches) and 10,675 electric, 4,397 diesel and 38 steam locomotives.

    Selection Process:

    The selection process for various Group D posts will include three stages as below:

    The RRB Group D selection process involves four main stages: a Computer-Based Test (CBT) for basic aptitude, a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) for fitness, Document Verification (DV) to check eligibility, and a Medical Examination to ensure physical standards are met, with candidates needing to clear each stage sequentially to secure a final appointment. 

    1. Computer-Based Test (CBT)

    Format: 100 objective-type questions in 90 minutes (120 mins for PwBD). 

    Sections: Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness & Current Affairs. 

    Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong answer (negative marking). 

    2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

    Qualifying: This stage is qualifying, testing physical fitness. 

    For Male Candidates: Run 1000m in 4 min 15 sec & lift/carry 35kg for 100m in 2 mins. 

    For Female Candidates: Run 1000m in 5 min 40 sec & lift/carry 20kg for 100m in 2 mins. 

    3. Document Verification (DV)

    Candidates who clear CBT and PET present original documents (educational, age proof, caste, etc.) for verification. 

    4. Medical Examination

    The final stage to confirm physical and visual fitness for the specific railway post. 

    Final Selection

    Merit list is prepared based on CBT scores, with age as a tie-breaker. 

    Successful candidates are empanelled and offered appointments by the Railway Administration after clearing all stages and medical fitness.

    The RRB Group D exam is a 100-question, 100-mark Computer-Based Test (CBT) with 90 minutes duration, featuring sections on Maths, Reasoning, Science, and General Awareness, with 1/3 negative marking for wrong answers, testing 10th-standard level knowledge and focusing on Numerical Ability, Reasoning, Science, and Current Affairs.

    Total Questions: 100 (Objective Type MCQs)

    Time Duration: 90 Minutes (120 mins for PwBD candidates with scribe)

    Negative Marking: 1/3 mark deducted for each incorrect answer

    Mathematics: 25 Questions (25 Marks)

    General Intelligence & Reasoning: 30 Questions (30 Marks)

    General Science: 25 Questions (25 Marks) (Physics, Chemistry, Biology - 10th level)

    General Awareness & Current Affairs: 20 Questions (20 Marks) 

    Key Points

    The exam tests knowledge up to the 10th-grade level.

    There's a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test (PET) after the CBT for those who clear the cut-off.

    The paper is available in English, Hindi, and 13 other regional languages.
