About Telangana
Forensic Science Laboratory (TGFSL): Telangana
Forensic Science Laboratory (TGFSL) was established by merging the Scientific Section
of C.I.D. functioning under the Police Dept., and the Chemical Examiner’s
Department functioning under the control of Director of Medical & Health
Services, vide G.O. Ms.No.1478, Home (Police.C) Department, dtd.08/11/1974. As
per para 2(ii) of the G.O., the Chemical Examiner to the Government of Andhra
Pradesh was re-designated and posted as the Director of the Forensic Science
Laboratory. The Deputy Chemical Examiner in the Chemical Examiner’s Dept and
the Director, Scientific Section, C.I.D. were re-designated and posted as Joint
Directors respectively. As per para 2 (vi) of the G.O., the Forensic Science
Laboratory stand transferred to the Police Department and be under the
administrative control of the Inspector General of Police, now DGP.
The Telangana Forensic Science
Laboratory operates various divisions that specialize in conducting
examinations on a diverse array of crime exhibits. These divisions encompass a
wide range of expertise and include: Biological Sciences, Physical
Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Documents Division, Forensic Psychology.
The Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory (TGFSL)
has been designated as a 'Government Examiner of Electronic Evidence' by the
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Section 79A of the
Information Technology Act, 2000.
The Telangana Forensic Science
Laboratory (TGFSL) is Telangana's main scientific investigation agency,
providing advanced analysis for criminal cases. In June 2025, it was officially
designated as a “Government Examiner of Electronic Evidence” by the Ministry of
Electronics and Information Technology, empowering it to examine and certify
digital evidence across India. The lab handles various evidence, including DNA,
fingerprints, ballistics, toxicology, and digital forensics.

Scientific
investigation: TGFSL supports law enforcement by providing forensic
analysis of evidence from criminal cases.
Digital forensics: With its
new designation, it is authorized to analyze and certify digital evidence,
making it more admissible in court nationwide.
Expert analysis: The lab
uses modern technology and experts to analyze evidence from areas such as DNA,
fingerprints, ballistics, and toxicology.
Case support: TGFSL plays a
crucial role in solving crimes and has contributed to significant convictions
in Telangana.
Prioritizing POCSO
cases: TGFSL prioritizes forensic reports in cases involving the
Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).

Designation as "Government
Examiner of Electronic Evidence": This recognition under
the Information Technology Act 2000 enhances the lab's legal
authority for digital evidence.
Handling high-profile
cases: The lab's Digital Forensics Division handles a significant number
of cases involving various digital storage devices and has been involved in
high-profile investigations.
DNA identification: In July
2025, the lab used DNA fingerprinting to identify eight victims from
the Sigachi Industries explosion.
